Alpine Soloist

New Zealand's Kea are the only alpine parrot found on planet earth. It is protected in part by the remote environment of the South Island's high alpine regions. A primary danger this endangered species faces is a result of its curious nature seeking out human interaction. These interactions can, and do, result in parrots being struck by cars and also historically being illegally poached by ranchers attempting to protect high country sheep herds. Photo taken on Milford Road, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.
