Yellowstone Drifter
As winter locks down hard in Yellowstone's high country, wildlife is forced to converge on the river corridors for food and safety. This convergence, however, creates conflict and brings survival into sharp view. This coyote is hunting the ice blocks that formed along the Yellowstone River by the LaHardy Rapids. His hopes were to ambushing a flock of bufflehead ducks that were diving in the flowing water to feed on aquatic plants and the large stonefly nymphs that are abundant in the volcanic riverbed. Hopes were quickly dashed as the ducks caught a glimpse of the coyote and fled. That didn't stop this hungry coyote from making a futile leap in the air as the ducks performed their evading maneuvers.
