Mamma Grizz - In Mono
This Yellowstone sow grizzly has legendary status due to her successful parenting skills, bringing numerous grizzly cubs to adulthood. This late autumn afternoon, following a root grubbing session, she took her nursing one-year-old cub to the safety of the Yellowstone Lake shoreline for a midday nap. Sunlit, solar emitting rocks provided comfort as the cub nursed. The nap time, however, was interrupted by the shrill cackle of a marauding raven doing drive-by flights. The only response from the grizzly pair was this quizzical gaze. To frequent Yellowstone visitors/photographers, this sow is referred to as Raspberry, and her cub became affectionately known as Snow, given her ultra blonde coat. Mother and cub stayed together three seasons before Snow was pushed to fend on her own. Which Snow quickly did, bringing down a calf elk on her own in the first week of her going solo.
